How nasal breathing will improve your sleep

And a handy tool to improve nasal breathing

60% of people identify themselves as mouth breathers. This can put them at a serious disadvantage, especially during sleep.

Mouth breathing leads to chest breathing. This triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response. A stressful state for the body to be in.

Nose breathing engages the parasympathetic nervous system that calms and soothes the body. This calming effect will enable you to fall asleep quicker and get more rest during the night.

People sometimes make fun of my solution. But, it’s one of the most effective tools I use for improving my sleep and breathing. It’s about nose strips.

It’s a stiff adhesive strip to put on the outside of the nostrils. When attached it gently pulls the nostrils outward opening up the nasal airway.

It lets the air flow easier through the nose. For me this results in more and better nose breathing and less mouth breathing. Combining this with mouth tape could force and develop consistent nose breathing.

Breathing through the nose decreases the chance of snoring and sleep apnea. This can lead to higher quality sleep and leave you more refreshed. (Check out this study on nose breathing and sleep)

Nose tapes are cheap and if you have trouble with a stuffed nose, you could give it a try.

Keep improving 👊
